Synthesis of an Organic Acid
In this experiment, butyric acid will be synthesized by the oxidation of n-butyl alcohol (primary butyl alcohol) by potassium dichromate in the presence of a catalyst (sulfuric acid). The resultant carboxylic acid will be purified by distillation.
Kit contains enough materials for 15 groups.
Included is 1 microchemestry organic combostill setup. Additional combostill setups are available for purchase (IS6006).
Kit Includes:
- 1 x 10 g Potassium Dichromate Crystal UN3086
- 1 x 25 ml Sulfuric Acid, Concentrate, 18M UN1830
- 2 x 25 ml n-Butyl Alcohol UN1120
- 1 Comboplate
- 1 Combostill with reflux column and distillation column
