Photosynthesis II: The Synthesis of Starch

Target Grade: 10-12

Photosynthesis II illustrated the phosphorylation of glucose to produce starch in plant cells. The kit utilizes the enzyme phosphorylase which students obtain from potato and then use to catalyze the synthesis of starch.

The completion of the experiment enables students to answer the following questions:

1. Is starch synthesis possible from gucose, or is glucose-1-phosphate required?
2. Is the enzyme phosphorylase required?
3. Is primer starch necessary for synthesis?
4. Does inorganic phosphate inhibit the reaction?
5. What is the time course of the reaction?
