Mechanisms of Herbicides

Target Grade: 9-14

Student will transplant grasses and weeds into flats and /or pots. After acclamation time, they will investigate how and why different plants are killed by different chemical herbicides. A simultaneous microbiological proof with seed plates will be run. Each group will choose two natural products and design a simple experiment to compare chemical vs. natural weed killers. A round table discussion including all designs, results, comparisons and possible environmental problems will summarize the exercise

This exercise is designed to show:

1. The effectiveness of the different categories of chemical herbicides
2. How these different chemicals work
3. Which are the Best weed killers
4. Their possible environmental impact
