The operation of the Make-A-Gas® Carbon Dioxide Generator is dependent upon the interaction of the activating liquid, dilute hydrochloric acid, with solid calcium carbonate in the charge cartridge. Carbon dioxide is collected in bottles using a plastic trough. After collecting the gas, students perform several activities to study both the physical and chemical characteristics of carbon dioxide.

• Determining the solubility and density of carbon dioxide
• Studying the combustibility of carbon dioxide
