Inertia Balance

The Inertia Balance is used to quantitatively determine the inertial mass of an object and is an easy way to demonstrate Newton's First Law of Motion. When pushed sideways you can observe that its motion is independent of the effects of gravity and you can calculate the periodic motion of the balance.

Apparatus consists of a frame with two aluminum trays joined by a pair of firm, horizontal spring steel strips attached to their sides. One tray (oscillating tray) has holes to hold cylindrical masses, and the other tray, acting as an anchor, is clamped by a C-clamp (not included) to a table or workbench. 3 Cylindrical masses of unknown weight are included and one mass is drilled. String is included to suspend the drilled mass so that the balance is not supporting the mass and the weight can be determined by the theory of oscillation.
