Fluorescent Dye Kit
Target Grade: 7-12
The set contains blue, green, orange and red fluorescent dyes. The dyes are suitable for coloring water used in demonstrations, particularly those preformed under black light (ultraviolet radiation of wavelength 320-400nm). The observed color of conventional pigments and dyes results from their selective absorption and reflection of various lengths of light in the visible portion of the spectrum. The appearance of color is absent when no light source is present. Certain materials, however, have the property of absorbing radiant energy of wave lengths not visible to the eye (usually 320 to 400 nm), converting it into energy of longer wavelengths, and emitting it as visible light. Materials possessing this property are said to be luminescent. These materials may be either natural (such as minerals) or synthetic (such as pigments and dyes). Most substances are not luminescent. For those materials that are luminescent, a small amount of impurity must be present. The amount and type of impurity present determines the color and intensity of the luminescence.
